Unlocking Your Work-From-Anywhere Dream: Greece's Residence Permit for Digital Nomads

Updated: Nov 6

digital nomad life in greece

In today's dynamic world of work, flexibility is key, and for many, the dream of working from anywhere is becoming a reality. Greece, with its stunning landscapes and rich culture, has emerged as a top destination for digital nomads seeking to combine work with adventure. With Greece's Residence Permit for Digital Nomads, you can turn this dream into a lifestyle.

What is the Residence Permit for Digital Nomads?

The Residence Permit for Digital Nomads in Greece is a game-changer for remote professionals. It's designed to accommodate self-employed individuals, freelancers, and remote employees who utilize Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) to work for clients or employers outside Greece. While the Digital Nomad Visa* allows entry into Greece, the residence permit is essential for those looking to extend their stay beyond the initial visa period.

Eligibility Criteria: What You Need to Know

To qualify for the residence permit, there are specific conditions that must be met:

  • Remote Work Status: Applicants must demonstrate that they are either dependent employees or self-employed individuals working remotely for companies outside of Greece.

  • Financial Requirements: Applicants must show a minimum monthly income of €3,500, with additional provisions for partners and children.

  • Documentation: Necessary documentation includes a valid entry visa or eligibility for a visa exemption, a full medical care certificate, and a residential lease or property purchase contract.

  • Translation: All non-Greek documents must be translated as required.

  • Additional Documents: The amount of sufficient resources is evidenced: a) by the employment contract or project contract or proof of employment relationship, in the case of dependent labor, services, or project, and b) Statements from your  bank

Accompanying Family Members

If you plan to bring your family along, ensure you have the necessary documentation, including marriage and birth certificates for each accompanying member.

Do I need a Residence Permit or A Digital Nomad Visa?

You are faced with two primary pathways: obtaining a Digital Nomad Visa or a Residence Permit in Digital Nomad Status. The choice between these hinges on your long-term plans, mobility aspirations, and the nature of your stay. Here's a breakdown to guide your decision:

A. Digital Nomad Residence Permit

  • Eligibility: Tailored for non-EU citizens that have already entered Greece, and/or already have an entry visa.

  • Duration & Renewal: Grants a stay of 2 years with an electronic renewal process that doesn’t necessitate leaving Greece, offering greater flexibility over the Digital Nomad Visa.

  • Fees: Involves a state administrative fee of €1,000.

  • Ease of Process: The application is managed by the One-Stop Service of the Ministry of Migration and Asylum in Greece. Expat Law can handle the entire process, ensuring you don’t need to appear in person.

  • Mobility Within Schengen: Initially, you'll receive a certificate for legal residence in Greece until your permit is finalized, which does not allow Schengen travel. However, with your existing Schengen visa, you can enjoy movement within the area until the residence permit is issued, eventually offering unrestricted Schengen travel.

B. Digital Nomad Visa

  • Eligibility: Aimed at non-EU citizens needing an entry visa, making it a fit for initial entry into Greece.

  • Duration: Offers a 12-month stay, with the flexibility to stay from 1 day up to 365 in a year.

  • Fees: The state fee is €75, plus a €150 administrative charge.

  • Application Process: Requires application at a Greek embassy or consulate in your home country, necessitating your physical presence.

  • Renewal Constraints: To renew, you must exit Greece post-expiration and reapply, making it less flexible than the residence permit.

In essence, if your vision includes residing in Greece for an extended period, potentially over a year, and you value the freedom to traverse the Schengen zone without cumbersome visa restrictions, the Digital Nomad Residence Permit emerges as the preferable option. It not only facilitates a longer stay but also ensures smoother transitions during renewals and broader travel liberties within Europe.
