How to Live in Greece with Passive Income: A Guide to the Financial Independence Permit

Updated: Sep 18

Do you earn passive income abroad? If so, you may be eligible for residence rights in Greece through the Financial Independence Permit (FIP).

What is the Financial Independence Permit?

The Financial Independence Permit (FIP) is a specific residency authorization provided to non-European Union citizens. To qualify, individuals must showcase their ability to sustain themselves and their dependents in Greece through ample income derived from foreign or passive channels.

What conditions must I fulfill to be eligible?

To apply for a permit as a financial independent individual, you should satisfy the following criteria:

  • Have a valid passport.

  • Obtain a valid type D visa (should be obtained at your country of origin!).

  • Demonstrate a steady and legal source of income, with a minimum of €2,000 per month***, plus 20% for the spouse and 15% for each child. This income should be verifiable through various documents such as tax declarations, bank statements, pensions, or leases.

  • Hold an insurance policy with full medical care.

  • Maintain a clean criminal record.

  • Have a property lease contract corresponding to the duration of your stay.

Is the family coming along?

Bring a marriage certificate along and a birth certificate for each child.

Steps to be followed:

  1. Obtain a visa that allows you to enter Greece legally.

  2. Once in Greece, apply for the residence permit before your visa expires.

  3. Once you have your permit, you become eligible to live in Greece legally for two years (three years as of 01/04).

  4. Renew for two-year (three years as of 01/04) periods, subject to the ongoing fulfillment of requirements. Family members' permits expire or renew concurrently with the sponsor's permit.

Note that:

  • The Financial Independence Permit (FIP) does not reward the privilege of employment within Greece but provides the holder with the freedom to travel unrestrictedly within the EU Schengen area.

  • FIP holders are entitled to the same privileges and advantages as Greek citizens, including access to healthcare, education, social security, and various other benefits.

  • The monthly income should not stem from a salary earned through employment in the applicant's home country.
